Project: Scratch Art: Spruce Needles
Materials: “Scratch Art Rabbit” and “Scratch Art Spruce Needles” videos. 8.5X11 scratch board, chalk, scratch board engraving tool and reference picture. Objective: Learn the technique for using an engraving tool on scratch board to render an image of spruce needles. Procedure: Watch the video “Scratch Art Rabbit” and discuss the technique used by the artist. Next, watch the “Scratch Art Spruce Needles” video once and then watch it again to complete the picture. Pause as needed.

Project: Cubism: Oil Pastel Cat
Materials: “Millions of Cats” and “Cubism: Oil Pastel” video. 9X12 white paper, oil pastels, and the image of the cat on a grid. Objective: Review what was learned about Cubism. Learn to create a grid by folding a 9X12 piece of paper into fourths. Learn to use grid coordinates to draw a cat. Procedure: Review what was learned about Cubism. Rewatch the Cubist video from lesson 7 if necessary. Watch the video “Millions of Cats” to observe the features of a cat. Project: Watercolor Owl Painting
Materials: Watercolor paint, 9X6 paper, brush, black, gold, silver, bronze Sharpie markers, crayola markers and a pencil. Objective: Learn about owls, paint an owl with watercolor paints and crayola markers. Learn the wet on dry and pulling color techniques. Procedure: Watch the “Owl Moon” video and discuss the contents. Next, watch the instructional video once and then watch it again as you paint. Pause the video as needed.

Materials: color construction paper, string, glue and pencil Objective: Learn about Alexander Calder and mobiles. Create a mobile with string and construction paper. Procedure: Watch the “Calder” video and discuss the contents. Become familiar with the style and artists. Next, watch the instructional video once and then watch it again as you build a mobile. Project: Koi Fish Fauvist Painting
Materials: Fauvism and instructional video, 9x12 white construction paper, oil pastels, and tempera cake paints. Objective: Learn about Fauvism and then create a painting of a pair of koi fish that utilizes the subjective and exaggerated colors with simple shapes. Procedure: Watch the “Fauvism” video and discuss the contents. Become familiar with the style and artist. Next, watch the instructional video once and then watch it again to draw and paint. Pause the video when needed.
Project: Coloring Book Project
Materials: Puffin and Design Video,, 8.5 X 11 paper, pencil, Bic ultra fine pen, sharpie fine point, and printout of reference pictures. Objective: Learn to draw a puffin and learn more methods of creating designs that follow cross contour lines. Procedure: Watch the “Puffin and Design” video once then watch it again to draw the puffin. Pause the video and discuss the steps for drawing the puffin. Continue to watch the video to draw the cross contour lines then draw contour lines over the puffin. Watch the rest of the video for adding designs that follow the cross contour lines. Add designs for the background, too.
Project: Designs with Lines and Patterns on Clouds
Materials: Line Video, instructional video, 8.5 X 11 paper, pencil, Bic ultra fine pen, printouts of clouds, and reference pictures. Objective: Learn about lines, shapes and patterns by creating designs on shapes following cross contour lines. Procedure: Watch a video about lines, shapes and patterns. Discuss the contents of the video and then watch the instructional video. Print out the images and then watch the video again to follow along. Finish the rest of the designs independently.
Materials: Video about Van Gogh, an instructional video, 9X12 white paper, pencil, tempera paint, ruler and oil pastels.
Objective: Learn about Van Gogh, draw a picture of a sunflower. Procedure: With a pencil draw a line three inches from the bottom of the paper. Draw a vase, sign it then draw one circle to represent a sunflower and then add four more behind, above and beside the first. Draw a smaller circle in the center of each circle and then radiating lines. Use the lines to create the petals. Be sure not to overlap lines for flowers that are behind each other. Erase unwanted lines and then use a black sharpie to outline all the lines you want to keep. Apply oil pastels in layers to blend colors and finally apply paint to the background and the table. |
